Material Recovery Facility for the Østfold Region

Mepex has been awarded the contract process for the new facility after delivering the pre-project in December 2021.

To meet increased requirements for material recycling, more resources need to be sorted out from residual waste. The facility is expected to be operational in 2026 and, as a baseline, will sort out resources from approximately 50,000 tons of residual waste per year (1 shift) generated by 270,000 residents in Østfold.

The facility is a coarse sorting plant for household waste with a capacity of 40 tons/hour and can handle up to 150,000 tons of waste per year.

The facility will sort out a mixed plastic fraction, in addition to magnetic and non-magnetic metals. Additionally, there is an option described for sorting out mixed paper and a possibility for further sorting of plastic from fine material (< 60 mm). The facility is designed to accommodate future sorting of fine material to meet the requirements of a post-treatment facility (ongoing development project in collaboration with several stakeholders).
